A bumper sticker from the past reads. “Don’t re-elect anyone”.
It sounded a bit radical when I first saw it. Surely there are SOME people in elected office worthy of another term.
Unfortunately, job number one for politicians becomes getting re-elected. Most state Legislators in my home state of South Dakota serve in one house until they are term-limited and forced out. Then they simply run for the other house and serve there until their term forces them out again. Many choose, then , to return to the opposite house once again.
Governors serve until their term expires. Then many choose to look for another political office. In South Dakota, former governor Mike Rounds is now running for US Senate, after staying in the Governor’s office as long as possible. Bill Janklow served eight years as Governor, then ran AGAIN after a short vacation. After that he ran for US House.
George McGovern and Tom Daschle spent most of their lives in the Senate. The list of career politicians in both parties is long.
Where have these career politicians taken our state and our nation? Ronald Reagan phrased it very well when he said “are you better off today than you were four years ago”. Certainly, most people today would have to answer that question with a resounding “no”.
The campaign slogans and advertisements become little more than a popularity contest. In some cases, a beauty contest. Principled people seem to immediately launch into a mindset of compromise when they contemplate higher office or re-election. Suddenly people like Rand Paul, in whom many people were placing hope for a principled future, began to take positions like ‘the Republican party needs to abandon social issues’.
Republicans have protected their careers by caving in to Democrats for fear of loosing the next election. Democrats have openly deceived Americans to stay in office.
It might not be time to follow the advice on the bumper sticker. It is time, however, to hold elected officials accountable to their records. That won’t happen without the electorate becoming educated; a process that may be too little, too late.
In the meantime, the very least we can do is be VERY suspicious of career politicians looking for another term in another office.
