His ship was sinking and defeat looked eminent.

The Serapis, a British battleship had shot the Bonhomme Richard full of holes from the battle and appeared to be lost.

The British captain, whose ship was much more powerful to begin with, seemed to have won this fierce battle.  John Paul Jones was the captain of the lesser ship, whose fate appeared to be sealed.

Still, when the British captain asked John Paul Jackson if he was ready to surrender, Jackson’s response must have surprised him.

“I have not yet begun to fight!”

With determination and grit, John Paul Jackson proved true to his words.  From what was almost certainly a condition of utter defeat, Jackson was able to turn the tables on the greater battleship and win an unexpected victory.

His words ring loud today, in the ears of Patriotic Americans.  America seems to be sinking and lost.

Still, the voice of the American soul is rising up to say “I have not yet begun to fight”!
