Can South Dakota afford Common Core?
In 2012, the Pioneer Institute provided a summary report identifying the cost related to Common Core.
Billions of dollars have already been spent, and billions more will be spent on this program.
While the hard costs are difficult to identify, experts agree that Common Core isn’t cheap. In many states, education is already underfunded, according to the education establishment. So why then, would so many of them embrace a program that is largely untested, unproven, unpopular and controversial? Good question.
David Barton presents some of the problems with Common Core in this video.
Can we “afford” to transfer control of education to the Federal government, and Federal standards?
Can we “afford” to take a step backward in educational rigor?
Can we “afford” to give the Federal government all the data on our children?
Can we “afford” the additional financial pressure on our educational system?

Citizen activist Tonchi Weaver provided a very informative paper to SD Legislators. An excerpt from that paper shows SOME of the cost in South Dakota related to Common Core.
– the per-pupil cost of the summative assessments is predicted to be $30-$40. That would place the average summative assessment cost for South Dakota students at $7,483,350.00 for 2014-2017 PLUS the cost of the interim and formative assessments. If that per-pupil cost applies to the other contracted assessments, an additional cost of $5,743,719.00 would be needed to pay for assessments, ballooning the total cost for assessments over the three-year agreement to: $13,227,060.00.
