Not by terrorists… by your GOVERNMENT!
The IRS has made a “secret” deal with the Freedom FROM Religion group. The group issued a press release last year which disclosed the basic elements of the “deal” with IRS, “The IRS has now resolved the signature authority issue necessary to initiate church examinations. The IRS also has adopted procedures for reviewing, evaluating and determining whether to initiate church investigations.”
Fox News reported on this issue, and the obvious contempt the IRS holds for churches in America:
The Alliance Defending Freedom has filed a lawsuit demanding information on the IRS plan to “investigate” churches. Even though the freedom of information act requires the IRS to provide the information, the IRS has ignored the deadline and refuses to provide details.
Why does this matter?
It matters, because the church is constitutionally protected. ADF Senior Legal Counsel Erik Stanley explained it clearly, “Churches don’t have to give up their freedom of speech to remain tax-exempt any more than they have to give up their protection against illegal search and seizure”. The IRS obviously disagrees.
It should make you uncomfortable that your church may be “investigated” if the Pastor speaks out on moral issues that may not set well with the IRS, or the Freedom FROM Religion group.
Maybe you should be MORE uncomfortable if your Pastor DOESN”T speak out!
