That’s what the left wing of the Republican Party would like most.
Rep. Charlie Dent suggests, “We should marginalize people who don’t want to govern.” He was referring to the Freedom Caucus members. It was a “nice” way of saying “eliminate anyone who won’t accept the way Republican leaders have been doing business”. Here is a news flash for Dent and other Republican leaders… Americans are fed up with the way you ‘do business’.
The Freedom Caucus may be the only hope (aside from Divine intervention) to change the corrupt political culture in D.C.
Make no mistake. Boehner and McCarthy would not have left if the Freedom Caucus were not powerful enough to force them out. They don’t hold a majority, but do have a strong enough minority to block some of the bad votes the majority would like to make. It is hard to know just how many members belong to the Freedom Caucus. If there is a list of members somewhere, I haven’t been able to find it. I wish I could. It would be nice to know who is more concerned about our country than about their own political career.
At this moment, the Freedom Caucus has the ability to force some significant change. Let’s hope Dent and other leaders are not successful in destroying the Freedom Caucus and those who are members.
A similar, but less successful challenge to the Republican elite leadership has been stirring in South Dakota for some time. You may recall conservative members being expelled from the Republican Caucus and un-ethical power plays by leadership. The establishment has retained its stranglehold on power in South Dakota by doing what Dent wants to do to Freedom Caucus members… marginalize them. That will continue to work for them until the voting public actually comprehends what Republican leadership is doing to South Dakota. At present, the extreme level of misinformation about Republican leaders is represented in a comment recently by a committed voter, “Our Governor may go down in history as one of the most conservative Governors South Dakota has ever had.” That belief completely ignores the hundreds of millions of dollars in tax increases ushered in during the current administration and the continued rise in government spending. On a national level, voters have discovered that Republican no longer means conservative. In South Dakota, voters have not yet reached that conclusion.
The Freedom Caucus has an opportunity to really shake up things in D.C. They seem to be off to a great start.
Let’s pray that the Freedom Caucus survives.
