That’s a headline I’m hoping for.
At this point in time, it’s not a headline. It’s only wishful thinking.
It might be early in the new administration to complain, but there isn’t any even any discussion on the issue. Debt and spending was not a real issue in the campaign either. It’s almost certain that Republicans will vote to increase the debt ceiling again in a couple of weeks (so government spending can increase… again).
It is true that building a border wall will result in a spending reduction. The Repeal of ObamaCare also has the potential to reduce government spending… depending on what Republicans do to “replace” it. At first blush, the spending INCREASES proposed by Trump will easily consume any savings that might result from either of these two policy opportunities.
Tax reform could provide some relief for families and corporations. It could also turn out to be little more than shuffling the deck to reassign the tax burden. Time will tell if the President and Congress will actually REDUCE taxes or just created new winners and losers.
Still… no serious discussion on reducing government spending.
I’m patiently waiting… and hoping.
