Maybe.
The Trump administration has reached an agreement with China that will re-open it’s borders to American beef.
You may recall that China banned the import of American beef in 2003.
Some experts say that this will be a real boost for the beef industry. They refer to a 2 1/2 Billion Dollar opportunity for US beef. Others are suggesting that this move will not have much impact. Time will tell. At any rate, it is encouraging news for cattle producers. Farmers and ranchers tend to be optimistic people. They have to be, or they would not stay in business through droughts and market crashes, in hopes of rain and better times.
This deal also opens US markets to “cooked chicken” from China. I enjoy chicken, but chicken cooked in China doesn’t exactly make my mouth water.
Overall, this probably is a big deal, and the beginning of opportunities for American producers of a variety of products.
The livestock industry will judge this news by the price of their cattle on the hoof at the sale barn.
In the meantime, I will choose American beef over chicken “cooked in China”.
