Texas Longhorns have long been considered “2nd class citizens” in the upper Midwest. Things are changing. Longhorn cattle of today are not your Grandpa’s Longhorns.
Not only do they have plenty of beautiful red meat on their bones (many Longhorn herd sires tip the scale at a ton or more), as an additional benefit, they sport flashy color and show-stopping horns. That’s a package that has cameras clicking, people looking and lips smacking! The increasing popularity of grass fed Longhorn beef (pictured to the right) isn’t surprising. It’s tasty, lean… and nutritionally superior!!
Longhorn numbers are on the increase in the upper Midwest. Some people enjoy having a Longhorn steer or two for pasture decoration. Others have been bitten by the ‘Longhorn Bug’, and become serious breeders. Still others are discovering the pure joy of just looking at other people’s Longhorns. Their gentle disposition further endears them to everyone.
Mark the dates on your calendar. Enthusiastic breeders from ranches will come from long distances and many states with their trailers loaded. This event is capturing National attention. Renown Longhorn auctioneer, Joel Lemley will conduct the sale on Aug. 17th. You will want to bring your kids and your camera. You might also want to bring your own trailer… you’ll want to take one (or more) home to your own pasture.
Rapid City’s Central States Fair will never be the same again!
