Over 750 Days Later and Still No Budget

Editors Note: The following is an excerpt from a newsletter issued by Senator John Thune (R-SD). It reminds us of the huge domestic failure of the Obama administration. The fiscal irresponsibility of this president is unprecidented!!! For two years of his administration he had a Debtocratic Congress, led by the likes of Reid and Pelosi……for most of it a super-majority. Yet their mutual dereliction of duty resulted. While the president has turned to the campaign trail and while he has begun his blitz to overwhelm us through the media with headline grabbers (Libyan war, a policy shift against Israel, etc.), he is actively trying to conceal his disastrous domestic policies.

This message from Senator Thune is a reminder of just one.

The upcoming Fiscal Year will begin in less than five months and the Senate has yet to pass a budget to fund government operations beginning October 1st. Last year, the Senate actually failed to do its duty, and never passed a budget, making it over 750 days since the Democrat-led Senate passed a budget.

Our country is in a dire fiscal situation with a rising national debt, and the Democrat Majority has refused to put forward a budget proposal that would begin to cut government spending and reform our entitlement system. As a member of the Senate Budget Committee, Senator Thune looks forward to the opportunity to debate a budget that makes the tough decisions required to address the nation’s growing debt and deficits, but the Senate Budget Committee Chairman has failed to act.

Last week, the Senate Majority Leader held procedural votes on four budget proposals that were more about political posturing and less about actually passing a budget. The budget put forward by President Obama earlier this year was brought to the floor for a vote and did not receive a single vote from either party and was ultimately defeated 0-97. Unfortunately, the Senate was not able to vote on a budget that has gone through the regular committee process since that has yet to occur.

The Republican Majority in the House of Representatives, has passed a budget plan that, while not perfect, would go a long way toward putting the country on a
sustainable fiscal path for the future. Although Senator Thune supported a
procedural motion to move to debate this bill, the motion did not receive enough
votes. Senator Thune believes failing to lead on this critical issue puts the
economic freedom of our country in jeopardy and does nothing but kick the can
down the road on a critical issue.
