Voters Rebuke Pennington County Commissioners

Only one Pennington County Commissioner voted against the “Wheel Tax”.

On Tuesday, voters said “thank you” to Commissioner George Ferebee, and soundly rebuked the remaining commissioners.

The disregard for taxpayers shown by the majority of County Commissioners in passing the “Wheel Tax” was successfully challenged by people who have apparently had enough.  The vote was nearly 60% against (6,022 to 4,086) this new tax increase.

The additional tax would have given another branch of government the ability to continue spending more taxpayer dollars, as opposed to finding ways to economize.  One good example of overspending on roads and bridges is the County’s decision to replace a washed out bridge on Antelope Creek Road.  A flood washed the bridge out last year on this gravel road in Pennington County.  An inexpensive, effective fix would have been to install a concrete topped Texas Crossing (probably $50,000 or less) instead of a new bridge (upwards of $200,000).  You guessed it!  The County chose the more expensive option!

Many taxpayers are still steaming over the Commissioners imposing inspection fees on all septic systems in the County.

The terms of two commissioners expires this year, Nancy Trautman and Lyndell Petersen.  Both of them have served for many years.  Neither have declared their intention to run for another term (unless I missed it).  At least one candidate has declared his candidacy for the seat now held by Petersen.  Mark DiSanto (husband of popular conservative State Legislator Lynne DeSanto) is running for Petersens seat.  He would be an excellent choice, if voters want someone who will watch out for their best interests.  No announced candidate has surface to fill the seat held by Trautman, but conservatives are looking if you are interested!

Given the length of time Petersen and Trautman have served, it would be nice if they gracefully retired.  It really is time for a new, taxpayer friendly attitude on the County Commission.

Maybe voters will next replace the Commissioners who tried to raise our taxes (again).
