The “Big Tent” philosophy in the GOP has created a “Big Hole”. A Big Deep Hole!
This “big hole” lets left-wing liberals in. It is also the hole through which conservatives are exiting.
Still, some conservatives are working hard to repair the hole.
There isn’t anything wrong with a “big tent” mentality as far as inclusion is concerned. The problem begins when the lefties outnumber the active conservatives and take over the tent. That has happened in National politics, and in “conservative” states like South Dakota.
This week I got an email from the GOP Chairman:
Friend, “I just wanted to send out a reminder that if you have a resolution that you would like to submit for the South Dakota Republican Convention it should be submitted by 8:00 pm CDT on June 20, 2012 for best consideration.”
I have a suggestion, but I don’t think the leaders of the SDGOP would warmly welcome it.
Let’s have the State Party ask each candidate for office to sign a pledge to support the party platform. Not mandatory, of course. Nonetheless, it would separate the men from the boys. The sorry truth is that at least one-third of the current candidates would not sign such a pledge.
It’s sad, but true that many candidates AND current Legislators have not even READ the platform.
MOST Republican leaders in South Dakota seem to support the platform LESS than they oppose it. They certainly score poorly, according to the voting scorecard done by the SDGOPers (see the scorecard HERE).
Wouldn’t it be helpful to voters if they knew which candidates will actually VOTE in concert with the PRINCIPLES articulated in the platform of their own party?? Well, don’t hold your breath. It’s not likely to happen any time soon. The current administration and leadership have shown us in the last session where they want to take us.
-
Implement ObamaCare in SD (as evidenced by $7 million dollars in Federal funds and Legislation to back it up… SB38 & SB43)
-
Raise taxes $100 million dollars a year
-
Endorsements of candidates who are pro-abortion, pro-gay and pro-big government
-
Breaching integrity of confidentiality in the Legislative process
-
Expelling conservatives from caucus and committee
-
Compelling Legislative staff to withhold information and research from conservatives
-
intimidation and threats to conservative Legislators
-
and much, much more… but you probably get the point.
It would seem, at the very LEAST, our LEADERS should follow the platform of their own party.
OR MAYBE IT’S TIME TO REPLACE THEM!!
