What’s with Mitt Romney not standing tall for Chick-fil-A? Months ago I began telling my fellow conservatives that Mitt Romney “will never be more conservative than he is right now.” My “I told you so” doesn’t make me feel any better. Apparently, Mitt can’t wait to run away from true conservatives even before he is actually nominated.
Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy has been targeted by Democrats and other liberals based on statements he made in support of the traditional definition of marriage. Yet during a news conference in Las Vegas last week, Romney refused to weigh in on the fray, saying it was “not part of his campaign.”
“What’s not part of your campaign? The First Amendment? Standing up for a man who dared to express his righteous opinion? Even those who disagree with Cathy’s opinions on marriage should support his right to express them under the First Amendment.
Rick Santorum, Sarah Palin and Pat Boone rushed to show their support for Chick-fil-A even as Romney tried to distance himself from the controversy.
Romney’s statement is troubling and only serves to exacerbate my distrust for his conservative confessions. The list of speakers at the upcoming GOP National Convention has done nothing to counter that distrust.
You have won the nomination, Mitt. Don’t travel the route laid out by Mc Cain, Dole, etc. Moderation, conciliation and failure to fight for the moral character of our nation will kill your campaign just as dead as it killed theirs.
If that is not the man you are, then go home in peace with our respect.
