Bad Lifestyle Choices + Socialized Medicine = Taxpayer Robbery
You don’t have to be a Darwinian realist to know that most people will adopt bad lifestyle choices when given the chance. Go for maximum taste, cheap thrills, and mindless entertainment, they say. The Christian concept of Original Sin seems alive and well.
Enter the Nanny State now that both parents work all day, with kids in daycare and government schools. Big Government will fund programs to tell you what to eat and what values should be promoted. Combined with Big Television, the Nanny State will even see to your very consciousness. How should I think? What opinions should I hold? What should I buy? How should I vote? 24/7, media-regulated lives from cradle to grave. What better way to control the faceless masses?
Sadly, Socialized Medicine actually promotes bad lifestyle choices. Indulge in whatever suits your fancy and medicine will bail you out. Sound familiar? Too much fast food and too little exercise? No problem, cholesterol-lowering drugs are available. Still a chain smoker? Award-winning technology is on hand to enable you to keep your “freedom” to smoke.
Medicine used to be guided by the Hippocratic Oath. But who can argue that now it’s the Federal Government which percolates tax dollars back down through the levels of government until at last the local clinic gets a share? To release the money, the local clinic need only install a new multicultural emphasis, or hire a diversity officer.
Not to worry. As doctors and hospitals lose more money under the well-paid eyes of central planners and university experts, the solution is, as always, increased growth. Quantity is the rallying cry of liberal Republicans and Democrats who march forward under the misleading banner of “fiscal conservatism.”
