The Federal government isn’t the only one stacking up debt.
South Dakota has its own outstanding debt… just short of $ 6.6 Billion. That equals about $8,000.00 for every man, woman and child in the state.
The budget signed into law by Governor Daugaard spends $4 Billion dollars in fiscal 2013.
State spending includes over $404 Million dollars in aid to K-12 education. That’s about 32.5% of the State’s general fund budget.
If you were called on to pay off your part of the state debt, as a family of four, you would have to write a check for $2,666.66 every month for a year. That is, of course, if you were charged no interest.
If you want some more fiscal fun today, take a tour of the state budget!
The State spends about $ 1.75 Billion dollars of Federal money and collects the remaining $ 1.25 Billion from South Dakota taxpayers.
