Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great American hero.
What would he tell us if he were giving a message to America today?
He might challenge us with the fact that we still have a long way to go on the road to loving each other regardless of skin color. He would probably remind us of some of the progress we have seen.
I think that might have been the beginning of his speech, but the ending would have taken us in another direction. I think he would have confronted us with the “new” civil rights issue… the right of an unborn child to LIVE. He would have told us that the killing of over 50 million unborn children is the most tragic sin of mankind.
Dr. King gave his life defending liberty and equality. If he were alive today, his very character would have compelled him to be a champion of the unborn. Without life there can be no liberty. Without life equality means nothing.
He might remind us that more black babies have been aborted than any other, but he would hasten to say color is not the fundamental issue. The most important issue is the protection of LIFE.
As we pause to remember Dr. King, Rosa Parks and other heroes who have championed the cause of civil rights, let’s pray for a new champion for the civil rights issue of our day… the right to LIFE.
