John McCain took opportunity to quote the Wall Street Journal in his effort to belittle Senator Rand Paul.
His remarks demonstrated his contempt for the younger Senator, and for that matter, anyone else who disagrees with him. As he read from the Wall Street Journal, the disdain for Senator Paul was clear in the tone of his voice as he spoke these words…..
“…if Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms. He needs to know what he’s talking about.”
McCain, a leader of the moderate wing in the Republican Party, has every right to disagree with Senator Paul. What is most troubling here is that this dismissive attitude toward Paul is typical of McCain and other party leaders toward conservative Republicans. Party leaders who continually cry for a “big tent” want a large door on the left, and a closed-door on the right. “Big tent” is code for including liberals-excluding conservatives.
Many conservatives don’t find themselves in 100% agreement with Senator Paul. That’s not the point. The point is that overall, he is just too “conservative” for comfort in the “big tent”. Paul brings an energy and dedication to freedom that should be welcomed by leaders of the Republican Party.
The moderates have blown the last two important Presidential elections. Have you forgotten that Mr. McCain? When Republicans embrace their conservative party platform and nominate candidates who support it, they win. Liberal Republicans find it much easier to blame the Tea Party conservatives for defeat, when it’s really caused by nominating liberal Republicans.
McCain should spend more time reading the Republican Party Platform and less time reading the Wall Street Journal.
