Contrary to popular opinion, the future is frequently knowable; not precisely, but sometimes with a surprising accuracy.

Our American freedoms are, quite simply, on the rocks… and it’s been a downhill slide for years. Our Constitutional rights have been trashed while most of us sleep, at least figuratively.

In the fall of 2010, U. S. Senators John McCain and John Thune co-sponsored a bill, S.3081, formally called the Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010 and tried to get it passed. Sam Kephart, one of our editorial contributors raised a serious public objection for Constitutional reasons, as did some others, and S.3081 was tabled.

However, the operative, offensive, and in my opinion anti-Constitutional, terms and conditions of S.3081 were later secreted into the National Defense Authorization Act for 2012 by Senator John McCain in a closed door session; no opportunity for public review or comment. That NDAA of 2012 was enacted without a public whimper in late 2011.

On October 30, 2010, the Rapid City Journal ran Sam’s Op-Ed entitled Thune-backed bill would gut constitutional rights. 

In his article, Sam expressly warned folks about how the Federal government was already monitoring, without a warrant, all their calls and data. Further, he warned that all this data was being “fused” (merged and collated electronically) for government profiling purposes. Sadly, there was no resulting hue and cry; there was no outrage. As a matter of fact, Sam was accused in some quarters of being a fear monger, alarmist, and conspiracy theorist (tin hat kind of guy).

I told you so’s aren’t very seemly, but this one is particularly instructive. Sam’s warning was extremely accurate, his claims now reluctantly admitted to by the NSA, and his conclusions vindicated.

Liberty loving patriots had better take heed this time; our Constitutional freedoms are on the rocks and time is very short.
