Living by faith is a very flexible way of living. And the application of such a life style may take time to develop in an individual’s life and experience. It may involve serving God, and not having a job in the big wide world to attend to. And yet, at other times, you may be required to take up work again. And this is exactly what happened to the Apostle Paul.
It says in Acts 18:1-4 (NKJV), ‘After these things Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome); and he came to them. So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers. And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.’
Here Paul had the flexibility to sometimes live by faith, and at other times work for a living. If you feel that God is calling you to live by faith, do not do anything drastic until you have assurance that you are doing what God wants you to do. It may be that he wants to teach you the steps about how to live by faith slowly. He will not want you to rush headlong into something that might spell disaster later.
Do not be in a rush, but ask God to teach you how the process of living by faith works. Ask him to open the right doors for your life. Let him lead you to others who have gone down this path before you. Remember, living by faith is not the same as living by presumption. Although God is able to do a quick work in a person’s life, this is not normal. God continually works on us throughout our lives, changing us from vessels of dishonour into vessels of honour.
