Are Police Being Handcuffed When It Comes to Gang Violence?
Ever wonder why so many men wore guns in the Old West? Truth be told, the guns kept the bad guys and good guys in equilibrium. You don’t mess with someone who will fight back. Concealed carry is even better because the bad guys won’t know who has a gun, and who doesn’t. So why didn’t everyone just rely on the police? Law enforcement was only here and there, but not everywhere, when most needed.
Today the police are like the ubiquitous video cameras. They investigate crimes, but only after the damage has been done to the victims. The idea is to eventually take the perpetrating criminal off the streets–that is, after lengthy trials and sentencing that benefits the legal system more than the taxpayers.
In “Unprovoked machete attack by illegal aliens caught on camera in Chicago,” Thomas Lifson reminds urban citizens that if they aren’t armed, self-defense can’t be left up to the police. Same is true for coeds on college campuses, isn’t it?
When a roaming gang attacked two innocent brothers waiting alone for a subway train, the police were nowhere in sight. Sure, the cameras could have picked up the presence of menacing gang activity in advance of actual damage, but the devices aren’t meant to be preventative.
The news media elite not only does what it can to keep concealed carry out of the hands of would-be defenders, such as the two brothers, but liberals also want to disarm the police as well. It’s not just military gear that is the target. They’d also like to disarm the military itself, turning soldiers into goodwill ambassadors and humanitarians if they could. Ever wonder why shooters like to go on killing sprees at military bases?
The rules of engagement that have already killed so many soldiers overseas is also being applied to civilian police forces everywhere. “Handle thugs and gang members with kid gloves” the policy is beginning to read. When split seconds count to allow officers to save themselves, the pressure is on to make sure that every legal right has been checklisted and all diplomacy has been attempted.
Police brass aren’t as free as they once were to protect their officers in whatever way it takes. Chain-of-command now includes one-sided “citizens commissions,” don’t care politicians, and liberal media who will see to it that officers in the street, in harm’s way, are essentially handcuffed.
Then, again, aren’t victims really to blame if they allow anti-police public attitudes to become widespread without challenge?
