Veterans Day Transcends Political Bickering, Bureaucratic Troubles
Unlike Memorial Day, which remembers military fallen in battle, Veterans Day salutes all those who have served honorably in America’s Armed Forces.
All military holidays are important because America’s freedoms and heritage have been guaranteed by those who have served in combat and support roles. As with ebola, we fight terrorism overseas before it gets to American cities.
Political bickering was prominent in recent election campaigns–and nightly news reminds us of boondoggles in our VA management–but the importance of being a veteran will stand for service to the country that transcends a day off from work, free meals at restaurants, or discounts at local businesses, though appreciated. Veterans Day is about national duty, sacrifice, and vigilance over a lifetime.
Vietnam veteran Bill Walker of Belle Fourche makes the link between Veterans Day and Memorial Day explicit when he recommends The Path of the Warrior YouTube video: “Politcs and public opinion ebb and flow like the ocean’s tide but the Path of the Warrior is steadfast.”
