“Everybody who’s committed crimes has been charged.”

 “The only people who broke the law are the six notaries who failed to watch some people sign the documents.”

Those were the statements by Republican officials back in 2004 when six… count them… SIX Republicans committed the “crime” of not personally witnessing signatures, but swearing an oath that they witnessed them.  There may have been as many as 1,400 signatures in  question in this saga.

These criminals were rounded up and held accountable to the rule of law, thereby preserving the integrity of the election process in South Dakota.  Then Attorney General Larry Long and Secretary of State Chris Nelson co-operated in bringing an end to this crime spree.  The punishment for these criminals was swift and harsh… well, maybe not too harsh.  They were charged with a class 2 misdemeanor, punishable by up to a month in jail and a $200.00 fine.

One charge?  For such a heinous crime??  No jail time was served.  The criminals went on with their lives… and political careers, with no serious consequence.

But that was then…

Obviously those were lawless times and even the Attorney General wasn’t concerned much about the integrity of the election process.

But now, there’s a new sheriff in town.  We have a law and order society in South Dakota.  Annette Bosworth signs the “oath” that she witnessed 37 signatures (not 1,400), and is quickly brought to justice.  Well, maybe not.  12 felony charges, thousands of dollars in potential fines and 24 years in prison???  Not to mention the possible loss of her license to practice medicine if she is convicted of even one felony.

Seriously…?

Six “criminals”, 1,400 violations equal one misdemeanor charge (for each criminal) with a $200.00 fine.

One candidate on a missions trip equals 12 felony charges, thousands of dollars in fines, 24 years in prison and loss of medical license.

It’s simple, really.  There are two kinds of “justice” in South Dakota.  One involves a serious prosecutorial over-reach and political retribution.
