Seems like a quite progressive approach. They know that everything old is conservative and therefore bad. To the proponents it is apparently easier to do multiple divisions to get an answer on a simple math problem than it would be to do a simple division. I guess this would be trickle up math, something to go with the trickle up economic theory that progressives believe work equally well. I am learning by example and await the approach to a more realistic math problem such as 68 divided by 7 with the answer rounded to the nearest two decimal points. (Sam wishes to share a $68 meal ticket equally with six friends. How much does each of them pay? Use the new math.)
I am still not certain whether this is common core math or is simply the latest new math fad that is being introduced in conjunction with common core. A common objective should be to teach children how to divide. Does the new math result in fewer mistakes? On really simple problems such as the ones in the examples cited it might, but even on that I remain skeptical.
