That used to mean it is simple to discern what it right.
Its not so simple any more.
In America’s rush to political correctness, demands are made to change the face of history by eliminating anything that may be offensive. That is a big mistake. We should rather use those opportunities as instruction and examples to teach the next generation what is right and what is wrong. The Confederate flag represents hatred to some and freedom to others. Whatever it may represent, that isn’t the real problem. The real problem is hatred and political correctness.
I have learned that hatred is not confined to color. There is plenty of it to go around. The real question is, “what can we do about it?” I am convinced that we will not eliminate it by changing the names of sports teams or burning flags. As a very young man, I was amazed at the inhumanity with which black Americans were treated by their white brothers. Its something I still can not quite get my mind around. I just know that the wounds were deep.
I can speak with some experiential authority on racism. My family is multi-colored, including Mexican Americans, African Americans, Native Americans and White Americans. We are also proud of the Irish Americans, Bohemian Americans and some which we can’t positively identify. It really doesn’t matter much. We love them. The church I attend is also multi-cultural. I have seen the deep racial and ethnical wounds up close and personal. I have also seen genuine love and relationship remove barriers and heal generations of hurt.
At the end of the day, it is a matter of the heart. When people allow room in their heart for hatred, bad things happen. The media loves to fan the flames, and people with bad motives capitalize on every bad incident. The deep wounds of some are only reinforced by new incidents of hatred and racism on every side.
America has a heart problem. People of every race, color and culture are guilty. Some more than others. There is only one way to find true freedom. It comes when the heart of our nation changes, one heart at a time. It is, indeed, time for you and me to be part of that change. It’s past time for us to live in an attitude of love and understanding.
Keep your Confederate flag, if you must, but raise the flag of Christ and BE THE CHANGE.
