A lawsuit has been filed against Governor Daugaard and the State of South Dakota.
The lawsuit, filed by the Thomas Moore Law Center seeks to stop the efforts of the Daugaard administration to continue promoting and implementing Common Core, and its participation in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
Two South Dakota mothers are the plaintiffs. Shelli Grinager is the mother of three school aged children and Amber Mauricio is the mother of five. Their children have been reduced to tears by the pressure of testing required by the SBAC. Mauricio tried to opt out so her children would not be subjected to the SBAC testing, but the school ignored her opt out request and tested her children against her wishes. Grinager’s children were not allowed to take more challenging math classes because the school had to “stick with the Common Core curriculum”. She is now homeschooling.

Common Core has been called “ObamaCare for Education” by some who object to the Federal control of education. As with ObamaCare, the Daugaard and rounds administrations have been supportive and complicit in the programs that give control to the Federal government. Rounds has referred to those who object to these policies as “professional dissenters”. Daugaard prefers to diminish objections with terms like “nonsense”.
South Dakota should stop spending tax dollars on Federal programs the people don’t want.
