Trump’s “Make America Great Again” mantra has fooled some conservatives.
It’s really just “Hope and Change” with a new face.
But conservatives should take a very close look at the man behind the mantra. Here is what some conservative leaders are saying:
Glenn Beck: …” three policies provided the fuel that lit the tea-party fire: the stimulus, the auto bailouts, and the bank bailouts. Barack Obama supported all three. So did Donald Trump.”
David Boaz (Executive VP of the Cato Institute) “Without even getting into his past support for a massive wealth tax and single-payer health care, his know-nothing protectionism, or his passionate defense of eminent domain, I think we can say that this is a Republican campaign that would have appalled Buckley, Goldwater, and Reagan.”
In an article by the National Review, Conservatives Against Trump, there are MANY reminders that Trump does not represent conservative values.
-
Trump supported gun control
-
Trump supported abortion
-
On health care ““Everybody’s got to be covered” and “The government’s gonna pay for it.”
Private property rights is a cornerstone of American freedom. Trump’s support for the use of eminent domain to take private property for a casino destroys that cornerstone. And what about faith? Are we ready to throw faith under the bus for someone who openly says, “I don’t need to ask God for forgiveness.” Really???
None of this strikes me as particularly conservative. Where are proposals to cut spending, reduce taxes and shrink the size and control of government? To the contrary, Trump is more in step with Bernie Sanders when it comes to RAISING taxes.
Trump asserts that his strength is in “Making the deal”. Isn’t that why conservatives are fed up with Republican leadership… for “making deals” with the Democrats? The history of political “deal making”, if anything, should show us that PRINCIPLE is generally removed from the equation. Isn’t conservatism about principle?
Still, Trump has captured the emotions of many voters… even some conservative ones. They just look past his history of liberal and progressive positions and his financial support of candidates who represent the same without even blinking. Astounding! He has convinced many that he is the master of “winning”. If winning is the most important thing, then we have truly lost our way. Shouldn’t it be about standing on principle? Shouldn’t it be about supporting candidates with a history that demonstrates their genuine belief in those principles?
It may not be as important WHO you support, as who you DO NOT support. But PLEASE, don’t pretend to be a conservative and support ANYONE who does not embody moral conservative principles. You might support him. YOU might vote for him, but…
Donald Trump is not a conservative.
