They aren’t your Grandpa’s longhorns.
They are not the boney-butt steers you saw on the television series “Rawhide”.
Today’s longhorns are about more than just horn, its also about beef. That being said, it is still very much about horn. The magnificent longhorn bull pictured above is Cowboy Tuff Chex, who has a tip to tip horn measurement of over 98 inches. He was raised by Bob and Pam Loomis.
Another bull that has contributed significantly to the longhorn breed is JP Rio Grande.
His offspring have great conformation, color and plenty of horn. He was raised by Johnnie and Pat Robinson.
Wyoming Warpaint is another bull that left a mark on the longhorn industry. He might be the most under-rated bull in the breed. Holding the record for longest total horn in the world for years, Warpaint was noted for adding horn, even when used on average cows. He’ll always be one of my favorites. The partnership of Howie and Rombeck on this animal was a great adventure.
Darol Dickinson has dedicated his life to improving the Texas Longhorn breed. If you view the Dickinson Cattle Co. website you will see the fruits of his labor. While he has raised many important bulls, my personal favorite is Drag Iron.
Drag Iron daughters are in great demand. His color, conformation, horn and disposition symbolizes the kind of cattle Longhorn breeders strive for.
We have incorporated the Dickinson influence in our herd with this Drag Iron son, Win the Drag.
His first calf crop will hit the ground in a few weeks. They will combine the genetics of several of these great bulls. You can keep up with the latest information and pictures on our website. Like so many other longhorn breeders, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the dedication and efforts of those who lead the Texas Longhorn industry by raising and sharing such great animals.
