We have seen plenty of Republican Presidential debates.
This election cycle has featured several debates, most of which focused on encouraging candidates to fight with each other.
Megyn Kelly hosted what was the best opportunity to get acquainted with the candidates. It happened in Texas and was broadcast by Fox News on 2/24/16. Each candidate appeared on the stage with Kelly, one at a time. Questions were posed from the audience, giving the candidates the opportunity to respond without attacks and interruptions.
Senator Ted Cruz lead the evening with clear responses to direct questions from Kelly and the audience. His demeanor and conversation was very Presidential.
Governor John Kasich appeared by satellite from another state. He demonstrated his ability to answer questions in a way that puts most people to sleep. It isn’t that there was no substance, but he certainly doesn’t make me want to stand up and shout.
Senator Marco Rubio (also by satellite) demonstrated his ability to talk fluently. He is knowledgeable on the issues, and had no trouble responding to questions. I’m sorry, but I just have trouble picturing him behind the desk in the Oval Office. There is just something about him that leaves me feeling a little uneasy.
Dr. Ben Carson wrapped up the evening. Despite the first question being a difficult one… that being why does he not leave the race, he spoke clearly and convincingly. This was a format in which he does well. It might have been his best performance. Probably too little, too late.
Donald Trump declined the invitation to appear in person or by satellite.
It would be very useful for every voter to see this conversation with the candidates prior to stepping into the voting booth.
