The horns keep getting bigger and bigger.
Is bigger, better??
Longhorn bulls carry heavier horns, but even those with extreme horn tend to produce “traditional” looking females. Even so, there is some disagreement among Longhorn enthusiasts regarding champion bulls which are breaking the mold.
The reigning King of Tip to Tip is Cowboy Tuff Chex, owned by Loomis Ranch Longhorns. He sports nearly 100″ of Tip to Tip horn.
(Editors update: Cowboy Tuff Chex was purchased by Bentwood Longhorns in 2017)
Top Caliber is a more “traditional” horned bull, owned by Cliffhanger Genetics. TC has almost 88″ of TtT horn.
Clear Point carries more “pounds” of horn than any Longhorn you are likely to see. Nearly 88″ of Tip to Tip horn makes this bull, owned by Dickinson Cattle Co., a champion that raises eyebrows.
When I was first smitten with Longhorn fever, I fell in love with Wyoming Warpaint. His claim to fame was his total horn, and his ability to make average cows produce spectacular offspring. It was a dream come true for me to own this bull in partnership with JBR Longhorns. He is now deceased, but preserved in the semen tank.
Longhorn cows in the “big horn” category tend to be more traditional. Look at a few of these champions to see what I mean.
BL Rio Catchit is the currently crowned Queen of Tip to Tip measurement at 95 1/2″. She is owned by the Loomis Ranch.
Jester is owned by Dickinson Cattle Co. Her tip to tip measurement of nearly 88″ demonstrates the twist that is popular with many breeders.
Max’s Red Rose measures 87 1/2″ Tip to Tip. She is owned by Craft Ranch Longhorns. Her dam, Wyoming Rose ST, is a cow we owned. We lost her in a winter storm a couple years ago, but have a young daughter and granddaughter still in our herd.
What kind of horn do you prefer?
I like it all.
One of the favorites from our herd is Redman’s Legacy.
At her measurement last year, she was just sort of 85″ Tip to Tip. I like her classic twist. We hope to flush her this year to one of the top bulls in the industry. Which bull would you use??
At the end of the day, the CORRECT horn configuration for Longhorns is whichever kind you like! There is plenty of room for every shape and size. That’s part of the beauty of Texas Longhorns. Every one is unique and beautiful.
See LOTS of champion Longhorns at the GALLERY of HORNS. You can see more of our longhorns on our website.
Whatever kind of horn you like is good. Enjoy!!
