Ronald Reagan’s 80% rule has been turned upside down.
It sounds so good to quote Reagan in the defense of compromise. The Left LOVES it when conservatives buy that theory, hook line and sinker. Actually, it is a good theory when properly applied. Let’s say I want to reduce taxes by 20% and the best I can get is agreement to reduce taxes by 15%. That is a deal I would make any day. It is a compromise I can live with.
Here is where the Reagan theory gets turned upside down….
Let’s say you want to preserve the 2nd amendment. You want 100% of it to stand. The left wants to chip away at it, little by little. They only want to take away a “little” of that right. Let’s say only weapons they define as “assault” weapons. That is just a small compromise, so let’s go along with it. We still have MOST of our gun rights, don’t we? Next, they want to take away the right to PURCHASE a firearm if you happen to be on the no fly list. You might be on that list even though you don’t belong there, but MOST of us still have our remaining gun rights. Just a “little” more compromise. You see, the left is perfectly comfortable with the Reagan theory when they are able to chip away at our 2nd amendment rights. They just keep coming back for more until we have significantly reduced our freedom to bear arms. They will not stop until the 2nd Amendment is gone altogether. All the while, politicians insist they are doing the right thing by compromising because “We got most of what we wanted”. That is a VERY bad deal for freedom.
The 80% rule works wonderfully when you are GETTING most of what you want. It fails miserably when you are allowing someone to TAKE what you already rightfully possess. It’s why the left LOVES compromise. If they can win only 10% of what they want to take from us, they know that doing it five times takes away HALF. If they can increase taxes by 10%, and do it three times, they got a 30% tax increase. Little by little, “conservative” politicians have given away our money and our freedom… our future and the future of our children, in the name of compromise.
Yes, compromise is a wonderful thing if you are on the right side of it. Unfortunately, our freedom has been getting the dirty end of the compromise stick. I, for one, am tired of it. When it comes to matters of Faith and Freedom, compromise is not a good thing. We have long seen the negative effects of well meaning people willing to “compromise” on matters of principle. That kind of compromise has been instrumental in the downward spiral of America.
That kind of compromise will kill America.
