LETS GET WHAT WE PAY FOR

By Ed Randazzo

On Tuesday, the SD Senate defeated SB72, a bill that would have changed how the state reimburses districts for kindergarten students. Under the current law, school districts are reimbursed the same amount whether the children attend kindergarten for a full day or a half day. SB72 would have cut in half the amount of aid districts receive for each kindergarten student attending school for a half day.

SB72 was defeated in the Senate by a vote of 22-13.

I emailed all of the SD Senators that voted in favor of this bill to thank them for their support and I emailed each senator who voted against the bill to express my frustration. Reimbursement for services not rendered seems wrong to me.

I have received two responses from the opponents of the bill (Senator Rampelberg & Senator Rhoden), saying “It’s more complex than it appears” and “There’s a lot more to it than that.”

Sorry guys, I don’t think so. I think that you are our representatives in the SD Senate and I don’t want to pay for a full days work but only receive a half days services.
