Solution For Iranian Harassment Of US Navy

Iranian speedboats harassed a US Navy Destroyer this week.

These small boats had weapons which were “uncovered”.  They were given several warnings.  The Iranians ignored bridge to bridge communications and warning flares.

Still, the US Navy vessel took no action.

This incident begs the question, “What prevented these Iranian boats from launching weapons as they came within 300 yards of the US Navy ship?”

The outcome could have been significantly different if the Iranians had chosen to launch weapons.  The US ship was placed in a potentially dangerous situation by allowing these speedboats to rush in to such a close range.  The US Navy chose to “stand down” rather than take action.

It brings to mind an incident in 1988, when the US military responded to an Iranian assault on the USS Samuel B. Roberts.  Under the leadership of Ronald Reagan, the US responded by sinking 4 small Iranian boats and a frigate, seriously damaging an Iranian warship and destroying two oil platforms used for intelligence gathering.

President Obama apologized for that US response, and as commander in chief, has demonstrated a dangerous weakness which was clear again in this incident.  Allowing anyone to harass our military without a firm and rapid response only serves to encourage and embolden our enemies.

Is there a solution?  Yes.

Anyone demonstrating aggression toward US Navy vessels should be blown out of the water.
