Only a vote for Trump ensures a Constitution-minded Supreme Court.
That’s their line.
I am one who clearly remembers the fear mongering campaign line of now US Senator Mike Rounds, “A vote for anyone else is a vote for Harry Reid”. The result was the election of a new US Senator who immediately proceeded to rack up a dismally failing voting record on conservative issues. It also resulted in the affirmation of Mitch McConnell. Both of those results were losses for conservatives. Did I mention that the campaign line was a lie to begin with? Republicans had more than enough Republican wins to defeat Harry Reid without Mike Rounds… and they knew it.
The best counter I have seen to the new fear mongering “MUST vote for Trump or lose the Supreme Court” argument comes from Steve Deace, in an article published by the Conservative Review. I read the entire article, but particularly appreciated his conclusion:
“We have been lectured over and over again with the question “what about the judges?” That’s funny. Because the hysterical bottom line is if you don’t favor the use of the nuclear option in order to approve one of them, it is you who could truly care less about the judges and not #NeverTrump. Therefore, I’d like to suggest a modest proposal to settle this matter. Senator McConnell should go on television and pledge his life, fortune, and sacred honor that if you help elect Trump president, and retain the GOP’s Senate Majority, he will use all tools at his disposal to put a true constitutionalist on the U.S. Supreme Court. Including the use of the so-called nuclear option if necessary. That nothing, not even “Senate tradition,” will stand in the way of securing the courts, because they’re just that important. For if they’re not willing to use their power there’s no point in granting them any.”
The Deace article, titled “Is the Supreme Court a good enough reason to vote Trump? Here’s my answer” should be required reading for every voter. It points out the issue that has been so disappointing to conservatives… We have given Republicans the power and they have been unwilling to use it.
Many voters find themselves in the position I am personally in… struggling with my conscience regarding how to deal with this Presidential election. If McConnell would lead Senate Republicans in making the pledge Deace suggests, they might win me over.
This time, I need assurance, not fear mongering from Republican leaders.
