ADULT ORIENTED BUSINESSES IN LEAD, SD

As I reported on 1/19/2011: “The people of Lead are determined and resourceful and I suspect this is not the end of this fight to preserve decency in their town.”  I was referring to the voters of Lead, SD who turned out en masse to oppose the Lead city ordinance that would permit Adult Oriented Businesses (AOB’s) to operate in their town.

On Monday 2/15/2011, City Administrator Mike Stahl stated that opponents of the ordinance delivered more than double the required 112 signatures to get a measure on the ballot to overturn the ordinance previously approved by the City Council.

The people of Lead will now speak at the polls, likely on 4/12/2011 when there is an already scheduled city election.

Kudos to Citizens for a Safer Community and the people of Lead who are not afraid to stand up and be counted for decency. Community growth and prosperity need not be at the expense of compromising moral values.

THE OPENING NEGATIVE SALVO OF THE RAPID CITY MAYOR’S RACE

February 17th’s Rapid City Journal brought a letter from Bill Freytag of Rapid City who reported that he had received a research poll call concerning Sam Kooiker.

Mr. Freytag had actually received a call from a push-poll. (Dictionary.com defines push-poll as: an opinion poll done with loaded questions or offering negative information to sway the opinions of those polled.)

Mr. Freytag went on to say that “they wanted my wife’s opinion concerning Sam harassing city employees.” Apparently, another question asked for an opinion on the one-cent sales tax hike being actively promoted by Senator Adelstein in the SD Legislature.

I’ve narrowed the field of possible financiers of this push-poll to 2 individuals. Both are equally capable of starting a campaign for their candidate in the gutter.

What I still can’t understand is why that camp would even want to dredge up the Kooiker censure at all. Can anyone help me with this one?

I was completely wrong. It was announced today, Sam is running for Mayor.

Sorry Inde, BUT, No county or city can legalize Marijuana in S.D. without permission of the Legislature. and I dont see any law granting these units of govt. the authority to do so. If you would care to check the constitution of S.D. These local Govts. can only do those things they are granted authority to do by the Legislature. Yup, I am, all for electing independents. A great group of people that cant make up their minds what they believe in.

I guess the hundreds of thousands of South Dakotans who indulge will stop, now that you’ve enlightened them. Maybe they’ll amend the S.D. Constitution. I know you have a hard time accepting change, but it is entirely possible marijuana will be legalized in your lifetime.

First. I want to clear up a question that was brought to my attention. NO !! I am not Ed Schlitz. Although the other Ed has not brought up anything to defame me, this needs to be cleared up.
Now, Inde..are you aware that terrorists around the world are being financed by illegal drug sales in the United States and around the world? These so called hundreds of thousands of South Dakotans who are buying marijuana..illegally you refer to may very possibly be aiding and abetting the worst enemy our country is facing today. I also don’t have an opinion on marijuana. But as long as it is illegal, the people who are buying this drug are financing some very bad people. That…I do have an opinion on!

Good point. And another valid reason why we should legalize marijuana immediately.

Independents determine the outcome of virtually every national election in this country. You know that. So you can drop the pretenses.

I disagreed with the censure of Kooiker. But I’m not ready to judge and condemn Mayor Hanks over one issue. I still think he’s doing a fine job running the City.

I seriously heard some of the powers that be in Deadwood were throwing the idea around. You might check with Newland on that. Medicinal marijuana would be a big money maker in the northern Hills.

Glad to hear that you are on the right side of the censure but why the hesitance to judge anything. That’s not you, Inde. I strongly suggest you reserve a decision on Hanks until after the landfill trials.
Give up the pot dreams……….Montana is getting ready to reverse their bad judgment.

MT is getting ready to regulate medicinal marijuana, not re-criminalize it. Possession of small personal amounts of marijuana is a misdemeanor in S.D. They give you a traffic ticket for it. It will be legal sooner or later because it’s the will of the people. I prefer a cold beer or glass of red wine myself, but to each his own.

Here we go again, same old same old from the independents, the wishy-washy, the floaters. Because it’s the “will of the people” (you’re pronouncement and therefore dubious at best), then it’s good. That’s a variant of “If it feels good, it’s good.”

By the way, I don’t subscribe to the philosophy you mention. Mine is much more ancient. Something like “Follow what God has put in Abraham, Moses and your ancestor’s hearts.”
But, how about your variant of the Crusaders plan, “We have God on our side, and will battle the evil forces until we stand victorious on the battle field of truth.” How’s that working out for the Gentiles so far?

It’s working fine for God an His chosen people. Everything is falling into place, and will culminate with the Messiah coming to earth to lead us to the promised land. And of course Gentiles willng to accept the true word of God will also be afforded the chance to bring up the rear.

The Messiah will be coming to earth again but it will be for the second time.

The Gentiles had to conjer up with a”second coming” to explain the complete lack of world peace and other conditions laid out in ancient Jewish belief signaling the arrival of our King. You see, if Jesus was the Messiah, then the world would ahve to be perfect. Obviously it’s not. That’s just one of the scores of reasons the Jewsish leaders living along side Christ researched and examanined before determining he was not their Messiah. That’s what we believe to this day.

            February 25, 2011 at 5:27 am

There is no “conjer” about it. You just refuse to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. I understand what Jews believe. You are the one who is intolerant of the beliefs of Christianity.

You’re right, I should be more tolerant about your views, even though I don’t share them, and my faith is different. It would be much easier if you weren’t focused on combining your religious beliefs with everyone’s government.

            February 27, 2011 at 9:27 am

They are my beliefs and it is my government every bit as much as it is your government. I don’t tolerate your views, I respect your religious views. It is your inability or unwillingness to accept that your religious and moral values are integral to a man and he has no choice, if he truly believes, but to live them in all aspects of life, even his government.

Your reasoning reminds me of the book “Under the Banner of Heaven,” the true story of two Mormon brothers who killed their sister in law and her infant child. Their defense at trial was “God instructed us to kill them.” They were convicted of course.
In your case God is telling you to engage in unconstituional behavior. Different behavior, same principal. “Men never do evil so cheerfully and completely as when it is done out of religious conviction.”

“Men never do evil so cheerfully and completely as when it is done out of a lack of faith and commitment in God.” We ALL fall short of the perfection of God. The evil that men do does not come from God but from the sinfulness of men. The evil knows no boundary of religion.

Which ever way the vote in Lead goes, it’s going to be hard to argue with the will of the people. Speaking of that, I hear there’s some speculation Deadwood might consider legalizng personal use marijuana, like Denver CO did a few years ago. That would make for an interesting public vote, and it would surely come to that. It certainly would be a huge financial shot in the arm for Deadwood, as would legalized prostitution, as in NV.

I don’t think Kooiker could win an election against Hanks. Why would he try, he already lsot once and history is usually on the side fo the first victor.

I’m thinking the “speculation” you heard was a Deadwood joke. Were you not listening and reading of the shameful censure action taken against Sam Kooiker? Did you not think the voters expressed their disgust with the mayor and aldermen that voted against Sam? History will be on Sam’s side especially when we hear some of the testimony at the upcoming Fish trial.

I don’t bet. And no offense, I surely don’t need misinformed men trying to lead me to the word of God. Abraham and Moses have already been chosen by God Himself to do that.
