Brother against brother…

Neighbor against neighbor…

The struggle to determine what our country will look like is actually a life and death battle for America.  Abraham Lincoln might as easily have been speaking to our generation when he said,

“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”

At this time, the battle is not with bullets and blood.  It is a battle for control of the national agenda.  This contest has pitted brother against brother, Christian against Christian as well as Liberal against Conservative.  We are in a very literal sense, a divided nation.  We would do well to remember the words of Jesus, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.”

As America struggles in this new civil war, we should pray for unity and a restoration of traditional American values.  Absent that, America will not… can not survive.

Lincoln’s exhortation to persevere in the work begun so long ago by the founders of this nation, paid for over the decades with the blood of patriots in the defense of that noble work, should be a call to the America of today.

“that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
