Republicans literally OWN the political landscape in South Dakota.
They control every branch of government. In the SD House, Republicans number 60 to the Democrats 10. In the Senate, its 29 to 6. With the governor’s office in Republican hands as well, the Democrats might as well stay home. Both US Senate seats and the US House are also occupied by Republicans.
Its really nothing new. The last Legislature was 58/12 in the House and 27/8 in the Senate. So what will the Republicans do with this super majority? If history tells us anything, they will continue the march toward higher taxes, larger government, more regulation and other policies that have drifted to the left.
To be clear, there are some genuine conservative, God fearing Republicans in some of these offices. Some of them even dare to take their principles with them into the political arena. God help them.
If the Republican super majority continues to ignore the principles that made South Dakota one of the most conservative states in the nation, they may be setting the stage for their own “Brexit”. The Trump revolution resulted in large part from Republican politicians departing from conservative principles. Finally, people had enough and rejected everyone who had any association with the political system that had failed them. In the process, even some good people were thrown under the bus. It mattered not to the masses who decided to upset the political apple cart. I think the South Dakota Republican machine is so firmly entrenched that conservative Legislators won’t be able to stop it. But, there is a point where the people might catch on to what the Republican machine is really doing.
If/when we reach that critical mass, South Dakota may elect its own Donald Trump.
