Not everyone understands what that means.
I had the privilege of watching someone “at work” yesterday.
It took over an hour to take a legal deposition of one of the principles in a legal dispute. I had the privilege of sitting at the table, watching the proceedings. One attorney was seated across the table by his client, with another attorney on my left and one on my right.
The attorney on my left was there representing his client, who was not present for the deposition. I couldn’t help but notice that he was particularly unengaged and seemingly not very interested in what was going on in the deposition. At one point, I glanced over and discovered why he wasn’t very concerned. He was on his cell phone playing a game.
The game clock wasn’t the only clock that was running. At $200.00 to $300.00 per hour, the meter was running up billing hours. There isn’t much doubt in my mind that he will also bill for the time it took him to drive to and from the deposition, as well as “preparation” time and time to read the written deposition that he missed while playing on his cell phone.
He appeared to have no concern about what might be right or wrong in the case. Little did it matter to him whether the agreement in dispute was honored or not. His mission didn’t find either of those things important. He was just “running out the clock”. He will get paid. Handsomely. Fortunately, not all attorneys are like this one.
Fortunately, too… he isn’t my attorney.
