The health care proposal may just be the beginning.
Conservatives unanimously rejected Ryan/Trump Care. The Freedom Caucus effectively blocked the touchdown. Some of Trump’s actions and orders have pleased them, but on this issue he wasn’t close.
What would a conservative leaning Commander in Chief do? One might him to regroup and engage conservatives to find the help to craft a more conservative approach.
Not so.
Instead of finding agreement with conservatives to craft better legislation, the President’s Chief of Staff proclaimed on national television that they would be “working with moderate Democrats” to find the agreement that will take them across the finish line.
Working with moderate Democrats may sound like a noble thing to do, but it actually assures that the President chooses to move left rather than right. The votes are available in the Freedom Caucus if the President would go there. Apparently, he won’t.
Now, on to tax reform. It will be very telling (and interesting) to see if conservatives are, once again, left out of the process in favor of a more “moderate” approach.
Conservatives who pushed Trump over the top to win the White House are now getting a preview of the way he will govern.
And it may not be from the right.
