For some, Independence Day is all about fireworks.
Nothing more… nothing less.
While many of us reflect on the importance of this day in history (and enjoy well-managed fireworks displays), others use it for a reason to drink and shoot fireworks. The later gravitate to private property without permission and remote county roads.
Let the fun begin.
Unfortunately, that is a formula for disaster. This morning I woke to the sight and smell of a prairie fire on the southern edge of our ranch. With dangerously high fire conditions, this was not the way I had hoped to wake up. Our area is in extreme drought, so the hope and prayer is to awaken to the sound of gentle rain. Not so this morning.
I grabbed my shovel and headed in the direction of the fire, with a call to 911.
Short grass is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that it reduces the fuel available for prairie fires. This one had only consumed about an acre, and I was able to get some of it contained before the Rapid Valley Fire Department came to the rescue. Their response completely extinguished the fire and made sure all was well.
It was easy to determine the cause of the fire, because the “celebrants” were kind enough to leave their fireworks garbage in the center of the County road.
I will make a call to my County Commissioners today and ask them to pass an ordinance making it illegal to discharge fireworks on a county road or right of way, or on private property without permission.
