I couldn’t help but notice a new couple in church yesterday.
When I greeted them they smiled. At the risk of being accused of “profiling”, I will say they looked like they could have been part of the refugee relocation program. As the service progressed, I noticed that they appeared to be uncomfortable. To be fair, I don’t attend a “normal” church. It is a multi-cultural church that doesn’t mind getting noisy. Faith Temple Church in Rapid City, South Dakota is one of only two Church of God in Christ churches in the state. The denomination membership is largely African-American, with over 6.5 million members in America, and a much larger number world-wide. Let’s just say the worship service is lively.
This new couple sat near the back, and stood quietly during the worship service… until the worship team began this song….
Apparently, the couple thought they must have stumbled into a nest of Jihadists. All the singing about blood and war was too much for them. About half way through the song they got up and left the service.
I wish I could have had an opportunity to explain that the “war” we were singing about is a spiritual battle. We believe we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. The “Blood” we sing about is the shed blood of Jesus Christ, who died for our redemption. We believe what the Bible teaches, that the blood of Jesus washes us clean from sin and puts our enemy (the Devil) to flight.
I have continued to pray for this couple.
Admittedly, my church might not be for everyone. Every church has an individual personality. Mine just happens to be bold and happy. I like that. You are invited to drop in anytime.
You might like it too!
