Rapid City Professor Was Working in Pentagon during 2001 Terrorist Attack

Now a provost and professor at John Witherspoon College in Rapid City, Debra A. Shattuck was once a USAF Colonel and 28th Maintenance Group Commander at Ellsworth Air Force Base.  She was a young captain at the Pentagon when hijacked terrorist planes attacked the United States.

After retiring, Shattuck headed to the University of Iowa to receive a Ph.D in American Studies.  She also found time to speak to the Black Hills Veterans Writing Group when she came home.  On the tenth anniversary of the Terrorist Attack on New York City and the Pentagon, she also brought former B-2 base commander General Scott Vander Hamm (and former EAFB Wing Commander) who talked about his bomber scrambling on that day.  Writer and broadcaster Shad Olson of Rapid city led that anniversary event.

Shattuck’s new book this year is Bloomer Girls: Women Baseball Pioneers, but South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s recent online documentary film (Dakota Life series) provides the best overview, with Shattuck herself providing the narration.
