Charlottesville (home of the University of Virginia, founded by a slave owner) was my home for many years. Unfortunately, I have simply not had the time to put into writing many of my views with regard to recent tragic events there. Here is my opening salvo.
Charlottesville was an unwitting participant in a confrontation that resulted in the death of one young woman (in what to me has all the earmarks of a terrorist attack) as well as the related deaths of two officers in a… helicopter crash. The confrontation appears to have been triggered by the decision to remove a statue of Robert E Lee, with the cost of removal of Lee’s statue and that of Stonewall Jackson estimated to be around $700,000.
The cost of removal of the University of Virginia is yet to be determined. Perhaps overt sarcasm would be better avoided, but where does political correctness end? It is exceedingly difficult for me to believe that $700,000 would not be much better spent for something creative such as building a statue of a prominent black leader of the time. The new statue approach would reinforce major contributions of largely unheralded heros (Here are some suggestions: http://listverse.com/…/10-african-american-heroes-of-the-c…/)
