The most recent flap(s) have prompted a comment.
Representative Lynne DiSanto’s Facebook posting depicting people in the road being run over by a car and the NFL kneeling during the National Anthem are both expressions. Expressions we can agree or disagree with. Some see them as two entirely different freedoms of speech or expression.
A former State Senator wrote in an October 1 letter to the editor in the RCJ defending Representative DiSanto , “Stand in the roadways, you are dead. Is that hard to understand?” Wow.
Does that mean if a person doesn’t cross in the crosswalk they are fair game? It’s the law to cross in the crosswalk. How many of us have violated that law? When do the laws matter that we decide to follow?
Do I agree with those blocking roadways to make a political point? No. They are breaking the law. I understand the argument that blocking a roadway or an intersection and certainly impeding emergency vehicles is against the law. But is it up to us, or law enforcement to handle?
Everyone needs to take a stand when issues hit home and you have a passion. Representative DiSanto has the right to post cartoons as she sees fit. Will she be more selective in the future? She might be. She can also choose to apologize or not. It’s her call.
Now for the NFL.
I can’t even listen to, much less sing the National Anthem without tearing up. It just brings up some incredible emotion in me that I can’t describe. I’m not sure if it’s an admiration or gratefulness for those who have served and are serving in the military or just being thankful to live in this great country.
People again have a choice to agree or disagree. You can decide not to watch. If you can’t give up football, just don’t buy the NFL or advertisers’ products. It’s a powerful statement. Money talks.
