After the heady days of the Shot Heard ‘Round the World, Bunker Hill, the Seige of Boston and, The Birth of America on July 4th, 1776. Things got worse and worse and worse for the new Nation and its rag-tag Army and its Courageous General, George Washington.
They spent the last half of 1776 fortifying New York City; and then, hundreds of British ships started showing up; carrying thousands of Professional Red-Coat Soldiers and the Ferocious Hessians from Germany who often would kill prisoners. This was the greatest Navy and Army on earth against Patriotic shop-keepers, farmers, bankers, preachers, common men of all sorts, as young as 14, old as 75 ready to die for Freedom; but although they had learned Indian Warfare the hard way and were good shots; they had no chance.
After disastrous losses, and being almost surrounded; Washington who had been gathering every boat and raft possible; started evacuation in the dark. His entire army, horses, weapons and all quietly were ferried all night long to New Jersey. Night ended and still a couple thousand troops were on the wrong side of the river. Then the Greatest Fog in memory gave them an invisibility cloak to finish the Dunkirk-like Miracle. Most regarded it as the Salvation Fog sent by God.
The massive British Army woke to claim Victory and end the Rebellion, and very likely hang George Washington for treason, only to find their enemy had vanished.
The American Army beat the British to Pennsylvania across the River from Trenton where a couple thousand Hessians were soon stationed for the Winter while most of Gn. Howe’s Red coats decided to party the winter away in New York looking forward to Spring and certain victory over the bumbling Traitors.
As Christmas drew near, Gen. Washington knew that all of his troops enlistment ended on New Year’s Eve. He realized they must have a Victory or Die and the Glorious Revolution of Free and Equal Men would end.
He cried out to God and then inspiration came just before Christmas. The Holy Spirit of God said, “Cross the Delaware River at night; and surprise the Hessians.”
Inspired by their Inspired General, a couple thousand crossed a storm-heaving river, buffeted by Blizzard and Ice chunks. Then a slippery landing and an 8 mile march during which two men froze to death. The rest roared into Trenton with undeniable passion and Holy confidence. They killed several startled Hessians including their General and Captured almost 1,000 enemy. Halleluiah. . .Praise Be To God Almighty, Who gave them the most important victory in the History of America and. . . .
THE SECOND GREATEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD
GOD’S REPUBLIC OF FREEDOM FOR ALL COULD NO LONGER BE DEFEATED. AND AMERCA’S MOSES, GEORGE WASHINGTON PUT ON THE MANTLE OF INVINCIBILITY THAT COULD NOT WEAR OUT.
