Police arrive in six minutes.
That’s what Ohio Sheriff, Richard Jones says.
You have probably heard it said, ‘When every second counts, the police are only minutes away.’ That isn’t an indictment on police. It is just a statement of reality. Police can’t be everywhere, or show up immediately in response to tragedy. Therein lies the case for TRAINED teachers and staff to carry weapons so they can protect themselves and students.
Sheriff Jones decided to offer free training for teachers who wanted to carry. Just for the record, Jones is not some wacked out fanatic. He represents reasonable thinking Americans who are taking action. He expected 50 calls. He quickly received up to 500 requests. To accommodate the need, he is planning multiple training classes.
“You need back up, you need people in the schools,” Jones said in a CNN interview. “Officers aren’t always the answer. You need somebody without a weapon, that can keep their weapon secured, trained.”
In a recent school shooting, an officer on site waited outside during the shooting rather than attempt to stop the shooter.
Teachers and staff interested in protecting themselves and children should be trained and armed. Many states allow school boards to make the decision. If they refuse, they will be responsible for the lives that could have been saved in the next shooting.
South Dakota school boards need to step up and take action now.
