Probably not.
Truth brings division.
Jesus was the perfect man. Sinless… the embodiment of love. He was brutally murdered, crucified on a cross in a very public display of hate. What would make us think the adversaries of truth would treat us any better?
Even among the Apostles, dedicated followers of Christ, there was at times sharp division.
In the world of politics, many believe that compromise is the way to love and harmony. Some compromise on some things is actually a good thing. Compromise on principle is a bad thing… a very bad thing. Therein lies the biggest obstacle to “getting along”.
Ronald Reagan’s 80% rule is often used (misused) to justify compromise on matters of principle. If the 20% on which we disagree is based on issues of morality and principle, the 80% on which we agree becomes less and less significant.
Deep divisions are not just between Left and Right. There is large disagreement within the ranks of both political persuasions. The Left seems to have a greater ability to put their differences aside and come together for their common cause. Forgive me, but I think it is because they err from the truth and are perfectly willing to compromise it. It is my opinion that the Establishment Right has the same mindset, for the same reasons.
My definition of “Truth” and “Principle” comes from Scripture. I believe it is the only accurate definition. Those who have a different definition will consider me bigoted and narrow minded. I don’t mind. Some will suggest that my definition of truth is nothing more than my interpretation of Scripture. I can, no doubt, be wrong. That said, Scripture tells me that the Holy Spirit guides me into all truth. I believe that. Literally.
All this doesn’t mean we can’t find ways to enjoy people with whom we disagree. Some people are simply our enemies, and will behave accordingly. Those are people we can love, but will not “get along” with. Those aside, the key to harmony, in and out of politics, is beginning with love. Genuinely caring about others enables us to find ways to enjoy them.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better”. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn’t.
The art of “getting along” is just that. An art. It isn’t a science.
I am working on it.
