This may be the last chance to actually see or shake hands with a real Pearl Harbor survivor (Stan Lieberman, aged 100, died just recently). Steve Warren grew up on a cotton farm in rural Texas and was 20 years old when the early-morning attacks began. This retired Rapid City CPA has vivid memories of the injured and dying he cared for at Hickam Field on December 7, 1941.
Same goes for longtime resident of the electrician’s shack at SDSM&T, Loyd Brandt, who fought his way ashore in the Marine Corps invasions of Tinian, Saipan, and Okinawa. He was on 55 Pacific islands. Brandt was fighting on Iwo Jima’s Mt. Suribachi when the famous flag-raising photo was taken. Six of the seven Brandt brothers served as Marines at the same time in the Pacific. One, Herbert, was killed at Saipan.
