When we receive a “portion” of something, we receive an “allotment; a part of the whole that is ours to use, keep, consume, etc. The key is that our “portion” is our “possession” and under our control for a period of time; an hour, day, week, month, years, forever….
“Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26 (NASB)
“The LORD is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words.” Psalm 119:57 (NASB)
“I cried out to You, O LORD; I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living.” Psalm 142:5 (NASB)
“This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.” Lamentations 3:21-24 (NASB)
“The LORD is my portion,” As I thought about this concept this morning, it was apparent that we have to move away from the idea of “portion” as an “allotment” or a “divided piece” of something. When we receive the Lord as our “portion”, we don’t receive just a “piece” of Him as He is divided among all those who trust in Him.
When the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us and be our “portion” forever, He represents the Presence of God in us; the nature of God, the characteristics of God, and every attribute (love, mercy, grace, power, wisdom, creativity, etc., etc.) that make Him God. It is mindboggling that the fullness of the Creator, Almighty God, can dwell in each of the multiplied millions of believers in Him to the fullness of Who and What He is. The realization of this is not just an “ah-ha” moment. However, that point when the revelation of “Who He is in us” and “who we are in Him” ever really “sinks in”; it is a definitely an “OMG, OMG, OMG, moment”.
With the fullness of the Lord as our “portion”, we may not experience His fullness as an active component in our lives. What we generally experience of His “fullness” is measured by: what we accept Him as; what we determine is His role, or level of involvement, in our lives; what we will trust Him to accomplish in and through us; and how bold our “steps of faith” (actions we take based on what we believe to be true of Him) will be.
“The LORD is my portion,”; how high can I fly?
