Hemp Farming, Yes or No For South Dakota?

Governor Noem says “no”.

The South Dakota House of Representatives has replied with a resounding “YES”, on a 65-2 vote.  Now, the real battle begins in the Senate.  Will the Governor prevail?  The Governor will have to change directions, or we will see a full court press in the SD Senate to kill this Bill.  We soon shall see.

In remarks early on, Governor Noem had this to say:
“South Dakota is not ready for industrial hemp production. There are still questions about the impact on public safety, enforcement, and costs to the taxpayers. We need to see federal guidelines when they are issued and then decide if this commodity is as promising as they say it will be.”

Industrial hemp is different from non-hemp cannabis, or marijuana, only by how much THC is contained within the plant. Less than 0.3 percent is considered hemp while more than 0.3 or above is considered marijuana.

Dianna Young Fuchs is a Rapid City woman who has personal experience.  She posted this on Facebook on Monday of this week:

“I see some negative comments here regarding hemp in South Dakota and I’d like to throw in my two cents. As many of you know I had a serious foot injury (I was trapped under a Bobcat for nearly 45 minutes back in July) and a rib injury (let’s just say the horse won) within weeks of one another. Doctors put me on opioids and gabapentin. If you have the time to look into either of those pain-relieving solutions you might be shocked to find out how bad they can be for you. Opioids obviously are addictive, and gabapentin has long-term negative side effects. Hemp on the other hand, in particular, CBD Oil, is entirely safe, entirely non-habit-forming, and entirely effective for reducing pain. I was only able to use CBD oil legally in South Dakota for a few weeks before the state made selling CBD oil illegal in the state. I was determined to get off the aforementioned pharmaceutical drugs and was thrilled to learn firsthand how effective CBD oil is. And now I am no longer able to get this locally. So when I see people getting angry about this I feel beyond frustrated. Please do your homework. Hemp is not marijuana. It has been known for its health benefits for centuries. South Dakota is one of the only states where this is illegal. It’s worth stating that CBD oil does not get you high. Please, before you start getting worked up about this, take a moment to educate yourself about Hemp and CBD.”

That seems like good advice.
