If President Trump is responsible for the 31 murders last weekend….

… Is former President Obama responsible for the 468 murders in Chicago during 2015?

Probably neither.  Playing the blame game doesn’t solve anything, and it isn’t an intellectually honest argument.

For that matter, who is responsible for the 3,000 innocent children killed each day in America?… but I digress.

The suggestion that we should “keep these weapons out of the hands of mentally unstable people” fails on at least two counts.  First, the El Paso shooter used a weapon he wasn’t legally allowed to possess, with ammunition he wasn’t legally allowed to purchase and a 100 round clip which is not legal to possess.  In short, laws didn’t do anything to stop him.  Secondly, it begs the question of “who determines who is ‘mentally unfit’ to own a weapon”?  Not only does that place too much power in the hands of bureaucrats, it would not stop someone who is mentally unstable from illegally obtaining possession of a gun.

Further, if a deranged killer has a plan to kill people doesn’t need a gun.  An explosive, a car, a truck, a knife, poison… there is a long (very long) list of methods which could be employed.  More gun laws that restrict our 2nd Amendment rights will only impact law abiding citizens who aren’t the problem in the first place.

This is an issue of the heart.  The real solution lies in returning to traditional Christian and family values.

More gun laws misses the target.
