My Priorities in the Voting Booth

How do I decide who gets my vote?

A friend recently posed the question, “Which Democrat should I vote for?” The question was followed by the assertion that we are not ‘electing an evangelist’ when we vote for a President. It’s probably no secret that I am a Republican, but this made me think about how I choose to cast my vote.

First, my primary allegiance is to Christ. I look to Scripture for guidance in how I live my life. I don’t separate my Christian beliefs from other parts of my life… including politics. A candidate does not have to be a Christian to get my vote, but their position on moral issues is of primary importance to me. I’m not suggesting that I only vote for ‘perfect’ candidates who line up completely with my beliefs. Still, there is a standard below which I will not go when I cast my vote.

If a candidate (or Party) supports abortion, they will never get my vote… NEVER. For me, that is of primary importance. I will NOT sacrifice an unborn child in exchange for an economic issue or even one of my ‘rights’ as a citizen. Following that issue closely (perhaps inseparably) are other issues of morality. I don’t mean the CANDIDATE has to be morally perfect, but I will judge them with my vote by the positions they take on moral issues.

I am reminded of the Scripture that tells me when the Righteous rule, the people rejoice. The Righteous rule by casting their votes. If their votes do not reflect moral integrity, it is my opinion that Righteousness does not, in fact rule.

My inclination is to NOT rely on what other people or the news media SAYS about a candidate. I prefer to take a deeper look into the policy positions, and whether I personally believe the candidate is worthy of my vote and my trust. I will sooner leave a space blank than to vote for a candidate that does not align with my convictions on moral issues. Obviously, there are many other issues to consider as well, but before I even begin to weigh those, the candidate must pass the “moral issues” test.

I am fortunate to have good relationships with many friends and family members who don’t share my political and spiritual perspective. I have no need to fight with them over our differences. We are both entitled to our own opinions and free to vote accordingly. I am simply sharing how I prioritize my life and vote.

At the end of the day, I pray. For you. For me. For our country. For our leaders.
